Aunty Mo Si
hello..
i am using this man to make this page longer
- nolan
My Aunty Mo Si passed away quietly in Hong Kong in 2018.
I never knew her personally, having only met her as a baby. One thing I did learn from my mother was that she was a painter; and infact the very paintings we've had in our living room my whole life were hers.
Thinking upon this, I wanted to make a work that married her work and mine, to meet as artists and to share our work together. On the left, you will see a self portrait of myself with three of her paintings, they feature mountains, birds, rivers, poetry and lychees. I enjoy how different our works are, her chinese painting style against my photography.
On the right is a photo of my mother holding a photo of Aunty on her phone. My mum tells me she was a shy woman.
On the anniversary of Aunty Mo Si's death, a moth appeared on our backyard door.
It remained there for a week, unmoving and still.
After it left, my mother said "I think that was Aunty".

I remember you telling me about your Aunty's visit
and
it reminded me of the stick insect that visited me last year,
I think it was mum.
She just appeared on the wire screen back door, but moved to this plant the following day.
I watched her swaying, pretending to be a moving branch in the wind.
It was a few days before I was about to do a big walk for brain cancer research.
Stick insects are also known as walking sticks...

Jana took this photo of me in the mobius outside my bedroom window.
I called it, surface-in-process, a phrase Lygia Clark used when describing the mobius.
Retuning to this shape from 2016...
Is it just a giant sleeve?
Turned inside of itself.
i've been walking around a lot recently,
finally finding time this year - ive been trying to get back into my lockdown routine
i was really happy during lockdown - i had time, i wasn't working for money and i was just being, existing
walking myself through ideas and feelings of happiness, reminding me of what matters
do you ever realise how much pressure you've put on yourself, ego inflation. taking time to let go, knowing and trusting that everything will work out as intended,, ego deflation
To Lisa,
I love love this connection, from family to moths and stick insects...
thank u so much for sharing this
Also, you mentioned brain cancer...
My Aunty Elena was recently diagnosed with brain cancer early this year..
I am taken aback by the interconnectedness of these moments in time past and present...
Sending much love to you and ur mum Lisa <3

"Time and Space are one and the same"
I love this, I will think on it for a long while.

Geirthana,
Thank you for sharing this, I have often felt the same way. When lockdown hit, I felt like I had returned to my chilldhood in some ways.
I had little opportunity to work, so I often spent my time with hobbies, staying up late at night, chatting with friends online and over video call
It felt as though my world had paused, with no deadlines or expectations.. It was like I could exhale so much accumlated pressure..
I hope the time and space you need finds its way to you soon
Nolan
Lisa! I recognised the background.. perhaps we have the same book? :)
Nolan
This really resonates Geirthana I've been thinking about this a lot recently, how my body feels like it hasn't caught up to a not-in-lockdown pace, but I'm not sure what a not-in-lockdown pace feels like.
Immi
We must have the same book from Taiwan?
Yes I think! I ordered through slowburn books from melbourne :)
"Time and Space are one and the same"
"The hour between dog and wolf..."
"Mobius strip as a uniquely continuous surface which has neither front nor back, neither inside nor outside"
"cut through space.."
"surface in process..."
"Between a Dog and a Wolf" 2018
Nolan Ho Wung Murphy
Yeah, I got it from slowburn at semi-permament!
Nolan,
do you still have this fabric?
Where is it?
What is it doing?

I was reading back through my notebook from the last 12 months and there is a note I've written taken from a text that might be called "Becoming"? I'm not sure the author but I've written "'training the body how to be in the world".
Can anyone remember if they talked about a text like this sometime towards the middle/ end of last year?
A nice quote to stumble back across.

I'm actually not sure! It is lost to me... I think sometime between 2020-2021.. it disappeared..
a photo i took somewhere in taiwan

Happy Mid-Autumn festival every1!
中秋快乐!
have some moon cake..
Recently, I found these "lost and found" film negatives at a record shop in newtown
I wonder what kind of journey they took to eventually be found
I worry things like this will disappear one day
"One of the highest paved passes in Ireland at 1,496 ft., a twisting, narrow route with scenic views."

Im connecting/thinking fake walls/surfaces have something to do with wallpaper
I went to decorative arts/wallpaper/furnishing shops along a road in Rushcutters Bay- i took photos and samples. the panel below is LITTLE TUSCANY, many wallpapers show colonial watering holes...
Grafitti when written on trains, can travel, a persons name or tag can go all the way to melbourne - but it's dangerous etc...thinking about seals to, sealing things that travel - seals/tags
